Matthew began his martial arts career at the age of 6 years old in Fort Worth, Texas. Being small for his age, his father, a New Mexico recognized wrestler, enrolled him in Judo. He earned the rank of 5 kyu before transitioning to Tae Kwon Do, studying under Master Hwangpo.

In 1987, Matthew's family moved to Waco, Texas. Being the era of the Karate Kid (the good one), he wanted to pick up martial arts again learning Karate. His parents enrolled him in a Wado Karate school in 1988 where over the next several years he earned the rank of 1st Kyu.

He continued training Bujinkan until the July 2000 when he transferred to the University of North Texas to finish his Bachelor's Degree.

After completing his degree, Matthew joined the workforce. He gained employment with the Federal Government, and settled into his new career. It wasn't long before he realized what he was missing.

Matthew spent several years training in a mixed martial arts style, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Hapkido before seeking out traditional Karate again. In 2011, under the instruction of his friend Sensei Lee McCurrach, Matthew began to study the traditional art of Shotokan Karate.
